Potty Train Your Child

Most parents recognize that potty training their child is a huge milestone, not only does it show an advancement in your child’s learning, it also frees him/her from diapers and the maintenance of the diapers that can be time consuming and inconvenient.

A common question asked by parents is how do I know when my child is ready? Usually children are ready around the age of two to three years old. Many children will signal to you that they have a need to go to the bathroom. They may be playing and stop abruptly and facial expressions change. They may even say I am going potty. This is a great time to introduce them to a potty chair and show them how a toilet works.

It may take up to 3 months to successfully potty train a child, so don’t rush it. The most important thing to remember is to keep the child comfortable. You want to make going to the potty a positive event. Introduce the potty seat to the child. Let him or her sit on it with clothes on and show them how to use it. Never force your child to sit on the seat. Also have your child be familiar with the toilet. Show them how to flush it. Make them feel comfortable in the bathroom.

It usually takes about 3 months to potty train a child. If it is taking longer or your child is not progressing, he/she is probably not ready. It may even be prudent to talk with your pediatrician.
