Suffering from Depression

Feelings of sadness are common, but for some of us the sadness lingers. If you have been in a state of sadness for more than several weeks, you may be suffering from depression.

What is depression? Depression is a categorized as a state of sadness that lingers for more than 2 weeks. Depression although sometimes difficult to diagnose apart from normal sadness is usually associated with the following symptoms.

Many depression sufferers see a change in their sleep patterns. For many people they may be up late at night, get little sleep or conversely sleep too much. Sufferers also experience a noticeable loss of appetite and weight. This weight loss is not due to a diet or regiment of exercise but mainly in the person not having any urge to eat. They might be feeling irritability, lose their concentration frequently and have feelings of hopelessness. They might stop participating in activities, that brought much joy to them in the past.

However, treatment is a bright spot in depression. There are many treatments available to depression sufferers. And an extremely large majority of depression sufferers respond well to these treatments. Most treatments are pharmaceutical drugs that require a prescription. If you or a loved one shows signs of depression, it is advisable to seek a consultation with a physician or psychiatrist for diagnosis and treatment.
