Different Types of Top Level Domains (TLD)

If you are thinking of building a web site, here is information that is helpful on choosing the right domain suffix. Depending on the type of web site you are building or the goal of your web site should determine the suffix that you use. Here are some examples of domain suffixes that are popular:

.com for communication
This is by far the most popular top level domain suffix available. However since it is the most popular and has been around forever it is very difficult to find a good name. Most people think the .com means commerce because it is commonly used for commercial sites.

.org for organization
Many people that are part of an organization and would like to have a website to update their members commonly use the top level domain suffix .org. This suffix can be used for commercial web sites.

.net for network
If you have a network of associates or businesses then this is a good top level domain suffix to use. This suffix can be used for commercial web sites.

.gov for government
Only government entities can use this top level domain. This suffix can not be used for a commercial web site.

.edu for education
Only educational institutions can use this top level domain. This suffix can not be used for a commercial web site.

.info for information
.info is a relatively new top level domain that is mainly used for informational purposes. However, you can use this domain for commercial use.
